Peter Capaldi

Peter Capaldi was born on 14 April 1958 in Glasgow, Scotland, to a family of Italian, Scottish and Irish heritage — his grandfather had emigrated from the Lazio region of Italy. He grew up as a devoted Doctor Who fan, sending scripts to the production office during the Jon Pertwee era and receiving correspondence from producer Barry Letts that he has cited as formative to his career. He attended the Glasgow School of Art and fronted a punk rock band called The Dreamboys — whose drummer was future American talk show host Craig Ferguson — before training as an actor. He won both an Academy Award and a BAFTA for his 1993 short film Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life, making him the first Oscar-winner ever to be cast as the Doctor.

On television, he became beloved for his ferociously funny performance as the foul-mouthed political spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It (2005–2012), winning a BAFTA for Best Male Comedy Performance in 2010. His lifelong wish was eventually fulfilled when he was announced as the Twelfth Doctor in Doctor Who in August 2013 — the moment he appeared on stage, he instinctively adjusted his lapels in a gesture associated with the very first Doctor, William Hartnell. He had previously appeared in the show twice without playing the Doctor: as Lobus Caecilius in “The Fires of Pompeii” (2008) and as civil servant John Frobisher in the Torchwood serial Children of Earth (2009). He led the show across three series and four specials from 2014 to 2017, bringing a fierce intelligence, emotional complexity and profound moral authority to the role. Since leaving Doctor Who he has appeared in The Suicide Squad (2021), the Apple TV+ thriller Criminal Record (2024) and Black Mirror (2025).
