Norman Lovett

Norman Lovett was born on 31 October 1946 in Windsor, Berkshire, and grew up in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex. He didn’t enter stand-up comedy until his thirties, initially supporting punk bands in the late 1970s before establishing himself on the alternative comedy scene at venues including the London Comedy Store. He has a distinctive deadpan, surreal style that has made him a cult figure on the British comedy circuit for over four decades, and is cited as an influence by comedians including Stewart Lee.

Norman auditioned for the role of Rimmer in Red Dwarf but was instead cast as Holly, the ship’s eccentric, senility-afflicted AI computer — originally a voice only, but expanded to a disembodied talking head on screen at Norman’s own insistence. He appeared in Series I and II and returned in later series, most recently in the 2020 special The Promised Land. Away from Red Dwarf, he starred in his own BBC2 surreal sitcom I, Lovett, had a small role in an early Edgar Wright production, and made a cameo in The Young Ones. He also voices a navigation system in the spaceflight video game Elite Dangerous.
