Lewis Tan

Lewis Singwah Tan was born on 4 February 1987 in Salford, Greater Manchester, the son of English fashion model Joanne Cassidy and Chinese-Singaporean national champion martial artist and stunt coordinator Philip Tan. His family moved to Los Angeles when Lewis was one year old after his father was hired as a fight coordinator on Tim Burton’s Batman (1989), and Lewis grew up training in martial arts under his father’s instruction alongside his acting career — competing as an amateur Muay Thai boxer and studying Kung Fu, Jiu-Jitsu and Japanese sword.

His genre breakthrough came with a standout guest role as the drunken master Zhou Cheng in Netflix’s Iron Fist — which led directly to him being cast as series regular Gaius Chau in the science fiction martial arts drama Into the Badlands (AMC, 2018). He went on to star as Lu Xin Lee in Netflix’s Wu Assassins (2019), played Shatterstar in Deadpool 2 (2018) and Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), Tolya in Shadow and Bone (2022), and Sensei Wolf in the final season of Cobra Kai (2024). Most prominently, he led the 2021 reboot of Mortal Kombat as the original protagonist Cole Young, performing all his own fight sequences.
