Kim Coates

Kim Coates was born on 21 February 1958 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, and began his career on the stage, becoming the youngest person ever to play the title role of Macbeth at the celebrated Stratford Festival and later starring on Broadway as Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire. After decades building a formidable reputation as a character actor on stage and screen — including appearances in Black Hawk Down, Pearl Harbor, Silent Hill and Resident Evil: Afterlife — he first turned down the role that would define his career, worried about committing to a long-running series.

Persuaded by creator Kurt Sutter’s vision, Kim accepted the role of Alexander “Tig” Trager, the volatile, loyal and darkly humorous Sergeant-at-Arms of the SAMCRO motorcycle club, in Sons of Anarchy (FX, 2008–2014) — a seven-season run that made him a beloved figure among the show’s enormous fanbase. More recently, he joined the cast of The Walking Dead: Dead City (2024–2025) as Bruegel, a performance critics praised as one of the show’s most compelling villains, and appeared in American Primeval (Netflix, 2025) as the infamous Brigham Young.
