James Baxter

James Baxter as Jesus in Red Dwarf

James Baxter was born on 3 August 1990 in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, and trained at the Northern Academy of Dramatic Arts at Sunderland’s Royalty Theatre. His early performance in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe stage play Scarborough earned him a best actor nomination. He first came to wider attention playing Jake Doland in the long-running ITV soap Emmerdale, and has since become a familiar face as Leroy in the BBC’s Still Open All Hours and Joe Casey in Waterloo Road.

In the Red Dwarf Series X episode “Lemons” (2012), James played perhaps the most memorable guest role in the show’s later run: Jesus of Nazareth, portrayed as a peace-loving but surprisingly feisty fellow traveller whom the Dwarfers accidentally bring back to the future aboard Red Dwarf after a mishap with a time machine assembled from a Swedish flat-pack kit.
