Henry Ian Cusick

Henry Ian Cusick was born on 17 April 1967 in Trujillo, Peru, to a Scottish father and Peruvian mother, and grew up in Trinidad and Tobago before returning to Scotland at the age of fifteen. He trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow and built an acclaimed classical theatre career, earning special commendations at the Ian Charleson Awards for productions at the Edinburgh International Festival and the Citizens Theatre. His screen career began in British television — including a recurring role in Casualty — before he landed the role of Jesus in the film The Gospel of John (2003).

His path to international recognition came through a chance encounter: while staying with his friend, the actor Brian Cox, he met Cox’s neighbour Carlton Cuse — the executive producer of Lost — in a driveway. He subsequently auditioned for the role of Desmond Hume, the Scottish ex-soldier stranded alone on the island who holds a desperate secret about the fate of the world. The performance earned Cusick an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series in 2006, and he became a series regular from season three onwards. The phone call between Desmond and Penny in the episode “The Constant” is widely considered one of the most moving moments in television drama. He has since starred in Scandal, The 100, MacGyver and The Passage, and continues to write and direct as well as act.
