Cote de Pablo was born María José de Pablo Fernández on 12 November 1979 in Santiago, Chile. When her family relocated to Miami at the age of ten, she quickly adopted the Chilean nickname Coté — more easily pronounced by her American classmates — and went on to attend the prestigious New World School of the Arts before studying music and theatre at Carnegie Mellon University, graduating in 2000. She supported herself in New York as a waitress and babysitter while building an acting career, appearing in theatre productions at the New York City Public Theater and a string of short-lived television roles. Two days after the show she had been preparing for her Broadway debut in folded during its San Francisco run, she received the call to audition for NCIS.

She is best known for her long-running role as Ziva David — the fiercely competent Israeli Mossad officer turned NCIS special agent — in the CBS drama NCIS (2005–2013), winning an Imagen Award and an ALMA Award for the role. Her chemistry with co-star Michael Weatherly became one of the show’s most beloved dynamics, earning the character a surprise resurrection when fan pressure led to Ziva’s return in 2019. Both stars now headline the Paramount+ spin-off NCIS: Tony & Ziva (2025). De Pablo has also appeared in the film The 33 (2015), about the Chilean mining disaster, and the CBS miniseries The Dovekeepers.
