Chris Barrie

Chris Barrie was born on 28 March 1960 in Hanover, West Germany, where his father was serving in the British Army, and was brought up in Northern Ireland, attending Methodist College Belfast where he was Head Boy. After dropping out of Brighton Polytechnic, he developed his skills as a vocal impressionist, eventually joining the ITV satirical puppet show Spitting Image as one of its main voice artists — providing the voice of Ronald Reagan on Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s “Two Tribes”, among many other characters. He also had a notable cameo in Blackadder the Third.

Chris is best known as Arnold J. Rimmer, the neurotic, cowardly, self-loathing hologram who serves as the antagonist and unlikely companion of Dave Lister aboard Red Dwarf — a role he has played across all thirteen series of the show since 1988. Outside Red Dwarf, he played the hapless leisure centre manager Gordon Brittas across seven series of The Brittas Empire, and Lara Croft’s butler Hillary in both Lara Croft: Tomb Raider films. He is also a devoted classic car and vintage motorcycle enthusiast.
