Bill Duke

Bill Duke was born William Henry Duke Jr. on 26 February 1943 in Poughkeepsie, New York, and earned degrees in theatre from Boston University and fine arts from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts before training at the American Film Institute. He began his career performing with the Negro Ensemble Company in New York, and became one of the first four Black television directors in America after directing more than 100 episodes of shows including Dallas, Miami Vice and Hill Street Blues.

Genre fans know Bill Duke as Sergeant Mac Eliot, the ill-fated commando alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in Predator (1987) — a role that came after also appearing opposite Schwarzenegger in Commando (1985). He went on to play Trask in X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). As a director, his award-winning credits include A Rage in Harlem, Deep Cover and Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, and he received the DGA’s Lifetime Achievement Tribute in 2010. In February 2026, on his 83rd birthday, Duke was honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
