Amy Acker

Amy Acker was born on 5 December 1976 in Dallas, Texas, the eldest of four children, and trained for thirteen years as a ballet, modern and jazz dancer before a knee injury ended her dance career and redirected her toward acting. She earned a BFA in Acting from Southern Methodist University and worked in regional theatre across Wisconsin and New York before her career-defining audition.

She is best known to genre fans as Winifred “Fred” Burkle and Illyria in Joss Whedon’s supernatural drama Angel (2001–2004), a dual role that won her the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress on Television. She went on to play the hacker-turned-assassin Root in the science fiction crime drama Person of Interest (2012–2016), one of television’s most beloved queer characters of the era, and Caitlin Strucker in Marvel’s The Gifted (2017–2019). Her continued collaborations with Whedon include Dollhouse and the 2012 film adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing.
